A container makes a server reproducible: the same image, the same settings, the same start command, on any machine that runs Docker.

About Docker Server Setups

Running Minecraft in a container separates the server from the machine. You describe the server's version, memory and settings in a file, and the container installs and starts it the same way every time. Moving to new hardware means moving the file and the data folder.

The widely used image for this is itzg's docker-minecraft-server. It installs and upgrades server versions, mod loaders and modpacks at startup, and is configured with environment variables, so a whole server can be defined in one compose file.

Containers help with updates, because you change a version number and restart, and with isolation, because the server cannot touch files you did not mount into it. They do not remove the need to back up the data volume, and they add a layer to learn if you have only run servers by hand.

Mount your world and configuration to a volume so they survive container updates, set a memory limit that leaves room for the operating system and pin the image version you tested instead of following the latest tag blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my world when I update the container? Not if the world lives on a mounted volume. Back it up before any update.

Is it harder than running the jar directly? It adds a step if you do not know Docker, but it makes updates and moves much simpler once set up.

MCRank is Minecraft resource search and discovery. Featured placement is its paid visibility layer: creators pay to appear first, labeled Featured, on the page their resource belongs to and in searches that resolve to it. Payment buys placement, not guaranteed clicks, traffic or sales, and never an MCRank endorsement. It is bought by the owner of an approved resource, from their account.

Paid Featured placement is not available at the moment.
