About Rendering Performance Mods

The game's built-in renderer has not kept pace with modern hardware, so players often get more from a replacement than from any setting. Both mods listed here run on the player's computer and install like other client mods.

Sodium replaces large parts of the renderer with a more efficient implementation. It raises frame rates and reduces stutter, particularly on mid-range machines, and it adds finer video options. It is available for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt.

Iris adds shader pack support on those same loaders and is designed to be compatible with packs written for OptiFine. It works with Sodium: the two are commonly installed together, with Sodium providing the speed and Iris the shaders.

Both are client-side. A server cannot install them for players and does not need them, so their relevance to a server owner is advice: when players ask how to get better performance or shaders, these are the standard answers. Note that Sodium is distributed under a source-available licence, so check its terms if you plan to redistribute it in a pack.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Sodium to use Iris? No, but they are designed to work together and most players install both.

Does the server need these? No. They run on the player's computer only.

MCRank is Minecraft resource search and discovery. Featured placement is its paid visibility layer: creators pay to appear first, labeled Featured, on the page their resource belongs to and in searches that resolve to it. Payment buys placement, not guaranteed clicks, traffic or sales, and never an MCRank endorsement. It is bought by the owner of an approved resource, from their account.

Paid Featured placement is not available at the moment.
